Types of Casinos in Shreveport

Louisiana has 15 riverboat casinos, under a law enacted in 1991. The casinos are in many ways still operating under the regulatory structure of that law. The Pelican State is home to 15 riverboat casinos and Caesars’s land-based Harrah’s New Orleans. Including that venue and the Eldorado Resort and Casino in Shreveport, the two operators control six.

There are two types of casinos in Shreveport and neighboring Bossier City: six riverboat casinos and one pari-mutuel casino.

Riverboat Casinos in Shreveport

In 1991, Louisiana was the fourth state to approve riverboat casinos and its gaming law allows a maximum of 15 riverboat casinos statewide. All Louisiana riverboat casinos must remain docksideand they are not allowed to cruise.

There are two riverboat casinos in Shreveport and four in Bossier City which is located across the Red River from Shreveport. All six of them offer electronic gaming machines, as well as anassortment of table games.

Pari-Mutuel Casinos in Shreveport

One of the Shreveport casinos is located at a horse track. That pari-mutuel casino, Harrah's Louisiana Downs, is situated about 10 miles east of Shreveport in Bossier City. That casino only hasslot machines. There are not any table games and, additionally, that casino does not have any video poker games.

Gaming regulations re­quire that gaming machines at all (non-Indian) Shreveport casinos be programmed to pay back no less than 80% and no more than 99.9%.

Louisiana is home to three types of casinos: riverboat casinos, Native American casinos, and one land-based casino.

In 1991 Louisiana approved riverboat casino gambling, it was actually the fourth state in the U.S. to legalize it. In 1991 the law only allowed for a maximum of 15 riverboats to operate statewide. A year later, in 1992, New Orleans added a provision to allow for the one land-based casino, Harrah’s New Orleans.

In Louisiana there are three Native American Indian land-based casinos, and four slot machine-only casinos located at pari-mutuel facilities. In Louisiana video poker is permitted at Louisiana truck stops, bars/taverns, and OTB’s are in over half of the state’s 64 parish­es (counties).
