Porte de Versailles (French pronunciation: [pɔʁt də vɛʁsɑj]) is a station on Line 12 of the Paris Métro, as well as the southern terminus of Île-de-France tramway Line 2 and a stop on Île-de-France tramway Line 3a in the 15th arrondissement. Nearby are the Paris expo Porte de Versailles and Dôme de Paris indoor sports venue.

History[edit]

Métro station[edit]

The station was opened on 5 November 1910 as part of the stage of Line A of the Nord-Sud Company from Porte de Versailles to Notre-Dame-de-Lorette. The line was taken over by the Métro network in 1930; it became Line 12. It was the southern terminus of the line until the extension of the line to Mairie d'Issy on 24 March 1934. The station was relocated during the extension and the area of the old station is now occupied by storage sidings. It is named after the Porte de Versailles, a gate in the nineteenth century Thiers wall of Paris, which led to the city of Versailles.

Tramway stop[edit]

Porte

The Île-de-France tramway Line 3 (now 3a) stop opened on 16 December 2006 as part of the initial section of the tramway between Pont du Garigliano and Porte d'Ivry. Île-de-France tramway Line 2 was extended from Issy – Val de Seine to Porte de Versailles on 21 November 2009.

The Pantheon

Casino Porte D'ivry

Located atop the hill of Sainte-Geneviève, the Pantheon was once a church dedicated to the patron saint of Paris. Today it’s a renowned necropolis where the great citizens of the Republic lie at rest.

The author from which our hotel takes its theme, Alexandre Dumas, was interred here in 2002. The view of Paris from the colonnade of the Dome alone makes it well worth a visit.

The Jardin des Plantes

Once a medicinal herb garden for royalty, today the Jardin des Plantes is a green space open to the public, offering visitors beautiful flower beds and avenues of plane trees where they can stop, sit on a bench and enjoy the calm of the place.

A magnificent winter garden contains dozens of exotic plants, including banana and palm trees, which allow us to continue our journey through the world of the Count of Monte Cristo.

The Paris Catacombs

The Paris Catacombs is a unique and amazing place. Even lower than the Metro or the sewers, this gigantic ossuary is a winding labyrinth filled with over 6 million bones from various Parisian cemeteries.

The ambient temperature never exceeds 15 degrees, but it’s the frescoes and sculptures made of skulls and bones that will make you shiver. It’s a doorway to another world, right here under our feet.
