Upon arriving at the Foxwoods, we opted to valet our car (free if you are staying with the hotel), headed to VIP Check-In and then up to our room on the 19th floor. Foxwoods Resort Casino is known as the “wonder in the Connecticut woods” and when you peek out the window you’ll see why. Foxwoods, owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation in Connecticut, is figuring out how to make gambling, dining and other attractions safe. Swapping decks of cards every few hours is one option.

The casino features special entertainment offerings, including a DJ spinning the best of the 80’s every Friday and Saturday night from 8 p.m. to midnight; complimentary cocktails while you play; exclusive radio giveaways every Friday and Saturday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., where guests can enter to win 80’s-themed prize packages including everything from Rubik’s cubes, leg warmers and fanny packs to an overnight stay at the resort; and special Fox Perx rewards for Foxwoods Rewards members who play with their Rewards Card, including free slot play.

“As part of our commitment to providing an unmatched experience for our guests, we are thrilled to introduce this new offering for guests ages 55 and older,” said Jason Guyot, Foxwoods’ Interim CEO & SVP of Resort Operations. “The safety of our loyal patrons has been our number one priority since reopening on June 1, and we are excited to offer them this exclusive experience where they can relax and play in a safe, frequently sanitized environment.”

Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut had dedicated a floor exclusively for gamblers 55 and older on Friday, in an effort to attract bettors during the coronavirus pandemic.

The new floor, in the Rainmaker Casino at Foxwoods, will be sanitized regularly and gamblers will be socially distanced while surrounded by an all older crowd, mimicking the senior hours a lot of supermarkets have adopted during the pandemic.

The floor will be open from 10 a.m. to midnight every weekend in November and will feature a DJ spinning 80s music at night, complimentary cocktails (think: kamikazes), and giveaways with 80s-themed prizes like Rubik’s cubes, leg warmers, and fanny packs.

“The safety of our loyal patrons has been our number one priority since reopening... and we are excited to offer them this exclusive experience where they can relax and play in a safe, frequently sanitized environment,” Jason Guyot, Foxwoods’ Interim CEO & SVP of resort operations, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure.

Foxwoods Resort Casino reopened in June with capacity limits, temperature checks, and the mandatory wearing of face masks. And while allowed to open, the casino has been forced to draw customers from in and around the state as Connecticut has travel restrictions in place, but exempts New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. Many other out-of-state travelers are required to either self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival or arrive with a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test within 72 hours.

Foxwoods isn’t the only casino to limit the age of its patrons. Last month, The Cromwell in Las Vegas reopened exclusively to guests 21 and older, becoming the first adults-only resort on the famous Strip.

The decision to limit the Foxwoods floor to older adults also comes as gambling capital Las Vegas has continued to struggle during the pandemic with a growing list of Las Vegas Strip hotels turning to midweek closures to survive.
