Casino To Tabulam
Meanwhile, police this morning confirmed five homes were razed by a separate blaze near Tabulam, which is still threatening properties. That fire, west of Casino, has so far scorched nearly 2,590. But getting workers to move to the remote rural village, located between Casino and Tenterfield, an estimated two-hours drive from Byron Bay, has proven challenging. The Tabulam and Casino areas have so much to see and do you would need weeks to explore the area and then you would realise you needed more time to see it all. The Tabulam area is the originating area of the Bundjalung Aboriginal people. White settlement occurred in 1839. The Post Office and Courthouse opened in 1849. Work began on the Tabulam bridge in 1899 and was finished in 1902. This bridge is the longest single span wooden bridge in the Southern Hemi-sphere.
Tabulam is central to the Ewingar state forest, the Bonalbo area, the Drake area, Lanikai, Emu Creek Bush Getaway, Clarence River Wilderness Lodge, Paddy's Flat, Pretty Gully, the Tooloom area, Tabulam Wetlands, Mt Pikapene road drive and the Ogilvie Drive. These really are just the tip of the iceberg. If you really want more, I would suggest purchasing Isabel Wilkinsons book 'Forgotten Country'. It describes all of the Treasures which the area hides. There is also another local tourist handout called 'Touch The Country Drive' information brochure. It is good value if you can get a copy.

Drake is just up the road to the West from Tabulam and is a treasure trove of places to see and things to do. The pictured hut is Kocks Hut and can be found up the way a bit and just to the left of Darcey's Hill. (You will probably do best to get directions from a local) This hut has since this photo was taken, been restored some what and the traveller can actually stay in it by arrangement with the owner. The owner lives behind the hut in a house up the track and over the creek. In this area there are two waterfalls and gold panning can be done in the creek. In this area there is also the Long Gully Road, Poverty Point, the road along the Timbarra River and Mt Carrington Mine and area to mention but a few. The book 'Forgotten Country' will give you much more to see and do.
MALLANGANEE is just 18 km East of Tabulam and the Labradorite is just 9 km further on. At this point there is a lookout where you will have your breath taken away by the expansive views of Mt Warning, Haystack, Sugarloaf, Ben Lomand and Mt Nardi. There are also BBQ and toilet facilities available. Within this area there are also separate flora and fauna reserves. Mallanganee also produces the best meat pies. I have tried one, yum. They are also available at Tabulam. This area is the heritage area and backdrop to the Bullock Team which used to pull the huge Red Cedar logs from the surrounding forests. The meaning of 'MALLANGANEE' is place of the TALL PINES.
Bonalbo is also worth a visit as there are numerous drives in and around this area too. These include a drive through the Richmond Range, Pioneer Park, Bean Creek falls, Emu Creek Area and a trip to the Gorge Station Rural Retreat. A little further up there are Woodenbong and Urbanville. These two spots are holidays in them selves. But, I will let you discover that one yourself.
I have mentioned Casino because on the drive back to Brisbane it would be recommended to come through Casino and up past Kyogle through the Lyons Road to Queensland. This is quite a picturesque drive. As with all of these areas don't expect the world to move for you. It is much more important to stop and smell the flowers.
